Today computer has impact in everyday life. Obviously seen from every cash or monetary transaction that takes place daily involves a computer. It is true to computer graphics. Computer graphics includes almost everything on computer that is not only text or sound. Computer graphics are all around you. You can see them from television, newspaper, or in advertisement. Computer graphics is also called as CG that is a data processing by using computer to insert figure, alphabet or signal. It is modeling and drawing picture on computer, also called rendering. It shows the result on screen that is geometry data such as figure, color, pattern, light and shadow including other information of the picture. A computer graphics is an important thing now because we can use it to create a several amazing things. Do you know that a cartoon book also using a computer graphic? I believe that you may have heard the word “2D” or “3D” but do you know what it is mean? I think of a few people know the history about CG. So, in the next paragraph I will tell you about the history and then the “2D” and “3D” meaning later.
In 1940, computer showed the graphics by a printer the result is an image coming from many alphabets brought together. In 1950, Massachusetts Institute Technology developed computers that have Cathode Ray Tube. Cathode Ray Tube is also called as CRT that is a display taking the place of printer because of appetency to contact during user and computer coprocessor. In the same year, SAGE (Semi – Automatic Ground Environment) is hold by USA. Air Force can change the signal from radar become to graphics on computer. This system is the first graphics that use the Light Pen to choose the signal on screen. The Light Pen is a computer input device that acts somewhat like a mouse. A user points a wand or pen at the monitor and the computer responds to commands sensed from the emission of light from the device. Computer graphics expand in many activities. So, graphics software was developed together with hardware. Graphics can be classified into 2 types which are 2D and 3D computer graphics.
2D stands for two-dimensional that is the computer-based generation of digital images—mostly from two-dimensional models and by techniques specific to them. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2d_graphics). 2D graphics is the picture that we can see easily now such as photograph, drawing, lined figure, symbol, and graph including cartoons on television. 2D computer graphics started in the 1950. It is mainly used in applications that were developed upon traditional printing and drawing technologies. Graphic can separate into 2 kind, bitmap and vector. Bitmap is the image which saves data with pixel or a bit point that shows color unit. For this reason, the image was born from many little points gathered together to make each image save many data. When we apply it, we can compress and format the data of bitmap such as .BMP, .PCX, .GIF, .JPG, .TIF. Vector means the image that creates by body of features line and property about color line. Moreover, it was created by Boolean logic example a human picture which was manufactured with many point of line, is body of outline. Colors of human picture occur from that color of outline line and space in that surface. The vector which we are familiar is .wmf that is clipart in Microsoft Office. Besides, you can find this format picture with Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand.
If we advert to 3D graphics, we will think of 3D computer graphics software or Virtual Reality. But nowadays, 3D graphics infiltrate into every circle and has become more dominant. Some works bring 3D graphics out to use fully. Not only in internet that VRML grow apace including in work of presentation is which 3D presentation more interesting. VRML comes from the word Virtual Reality Module Language. It is an international language for creating 3D graphics on network. 3D computer graphics are graphics that use a three-dimensional representation of geometric data that is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_computer_graphics) 3D computer graphics differ from 2D computer graphics in point of 3D view point including quantities, width, depth and direction of artifact so as to use for figure average in OpenGL and Direct3D. OpenGL and Direct3D are API that people like to use for figure result of 3D graphics creation. API stand for Application Programming Interface.
“Animation” when we think of this word we may imagine a moving image that is beautiful, charming and has awesome techniques such as an image of daddy fish looking for Nemo in the cosmic ocean, Simba that grows and learns to be a dignified king of the forest. Those images maybe engraved to several people to drool over to the animation movies. If we talk about the meaning of “computer animation” it’s the art of creating moving images with the use of computers. It is a subfield of computer graphics and animation. Increasingly it is created by means of 3D computer graphics, though 2D computer graphics are still widely used for stylistic, low bandwidth, and faster real-time rendering needs. Sometimes the target of the animation is the computer itself, but sometimes the target is another medium, such as a film. It is also referred to as CGI especially when used in films. CGI comes from the word Computer-Generated Imaging. It’s the application of the field of computer graphics that used 2D or 3D computer graphics to create the special effects in films or television programs. To create the illusion of movement, an image is displayed on the computer screen then quickly replaced by a new image that is similar to the previous image but shifted slightly. This technique is identical to how the illusion of movement is achieved with television and motion pictures. A motion picture is a length of film, with or without recorded sound, bearing a sequence of images that create the illusion of movement when projected in rapid succession. 2D Animation, 3D Animation and Computer Animation are an animation work that tends to be seen often at this time. As a result of easily penetrating the inside program, in addition to comfortable to fix and display program. So, it is very popular. Animator, who works about this way, is extremely in demand along with demand of the entertainment society in this era that emphasize on making CG Animation more. We can see from Thailand that there are many animation schools and studios. Much in evidence that many works in Thai entertainment society not only movies or advertisements but cartoon series also have CG Animation hidden almost all.
