History of Nokia

Ten years ago, the images of a businessman checking an e-mail, a teenager listening to MP3 or a modern woman shopping in websites in a mobile phone seems to be a scientific movie that is impossible to happen but it is an ordinary thing in this day and age. In addition, these have been developing rapidly by the largest mobile phone manufacturer of the world like Nokia. Nowadays, “Connecting people” is a slogan of Nokia that is actually opening the world of mobile phones and wireless devices to Nokia. Nobody doesn’t know the big corporation which owns this slogan. But how many people would know the history of Nokia before it becomes to big company that produces a highly popular mobile phone. Furthermore, it’s ranked to be the best seller of the world at this time. Do you believe that Nokia used to be a factory that produces a paper, resin and a cable line antecede? Let’s try to know more about the telecommunication in your hands.
Nokia didn’t start the business about electronics first but began with paper manufacturer held by engineer name Fredrik Idestam. In 1865, Nokia Company was located at the riverside of the Nokianvirta River that is the main river in Finland. This area is plenty of forest and lakes which is suitable for wood pulp production. That is where the company got the name that it still uses today. After that, it became a major producer of wood pulp that grew increasingly. Later in 1902, Idestam had developed his business from wood pulp mill to electric energy because the wood pulp manufacturing uses a lot of electric energy. So, he decided to construct his own powerhouse in 1903. But in World War I, Nokia faced a big problem about exporting that made him lose much money. At the same time, the business about electric energy progressed quickly because people increased electric energy utilization in Finland.

An electronic era of Nokia started in 1977 by Kari Kairamo. He received many experiences from his work in the USA which is different from the older generation that lean to Russia by exporting cable to Russia. Kairamo used western ideas and focused on producing electronic goods in order to mix in the era of energy until it became the main business of Nokia. Nokia expanded into new fields, mostly by acquisitions. In the late 1980 and early 1990, the corporation ran into serious financial problems, a major reason being its heavy losses by the television manufacturing division. Nokia responded by streamlining its telecommunications divisions, and by divesting itself of the television and PC divisions. Jorma Ollila, who became the CEO in 1992, made a strategic decision to concentrate solely on telecommunications. Thus, during the rest of the 1990, Nokia continued to divest itself of all of its non-telecommunications divisions.

Moving to the wireless era, the first era is NMT Mobile Phone Standard (Nordic Mobile Telephony) or the first analog mobile phone. They marketed NMT Mobile Phone in 1987 by using the slogan "Connecting People" so as to open freedom and continue in communication. And then this slogan is in the heart of mobile phone lover at present. After that, the better public telephone network was required in society. In 1989, Nokia improved GSM system to Radiolinja Company in Finland the first time. In 1992, Nokia introduced one of the world's first mobile phones, the Nokia 1011. Subsequently, Nokia attached mobile phone to be the main selling point up to now. Nokia produces mobile phones for every major market segment and protocol. It does not only produce a mobile phone but also develop handheld gadgets and technology in the meantime. The first idea that Nokia think is you can change the mask of a mobile phone that becomes the main option of Nokia later. Besides, speak technology such as Push - to - Talk (PTT) comes from Nokia also.

At this stage, we can’t refuse that Nokia becomes leader about mobile phone because of its highest circulation and popularity in Thailand. Nowadays, the head office of Nokia is still located beside Nokianverta River as usual in the past and continues to the future.
